Choosing The Right Electronic Health Record (EHR)



Electronic health records (EHR) is a revolutionary IT tool for the healthcare industry. It is a process of digitization of records. The manual process of maintaining patient records is very time consuming and tedious. The process often results in to insufficient records as well as with chances of more errors. The biggest problem with the manual system is that the records are maintained individually by each healthcare professional as well as hospital, hence, resulting into difficulty in accessing the data at the time of emergency. 

A doctor has to take care of a no. of issues including maintaining patient records, which being a time consuming process. Electronic health records or ehr seems to be an answer to some of the problems faced by healthcare professionals. However, a healthcare professional or a hospital has to be very careful in choosing the ehr system as not all ehr systems are alike. Each system differs in capabilities... at times some capabilities may not be suitable for a particular practice or hospital setup.

At the time of implementation of an electronic health records (ehr) system it is advisable to consider the points as mentioned below:

- Does the ehr system in a position to allow you to meet your goals

- Is the ehr certified by CCHIT

- The total cost of ehr

- Ability to interface with local laboratories and hospitals

- Is the system compatible with the existing infrastructure

- System customization
